Movember – a word that has now been in our vocabulary for nearly 15 years now, and other than an excuse to grow some facial insulation for winter, what is Movember all about?
What started as a Foundation to raise awareness for prostate and testicular cancer has now developed into a men's health foundation – whether that’s the aforementioned issues, mental health or male suicide. The Movember Foundation site has some eye-opening stats – prostate cancer will double in the next 15 years, it already has in the last 50 years! Three-quarters of all suicides are men and poor mental health leads to 500,000 men taking their own lives each year – that equates to one every minute! All of this is pretty scary – but we can ALL do something to change this!
Movember Foundation has some pretty amazing goals – by 2030 they aim to reduce the number of men prematurely dying by 25%. Using the suicide stats alone, that a staggering 125,000 lives saved each year! By bringing in and working with specialists from around the world, they are doing what no other men's charity has been able to do before – tackle men's health on a GLOBAL scale.
By giving men the facts, changing behaviour, creating a service and listening, the Movember Foundation is ready to win the fight against prostate and testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention.
